Divorces Spike in March and August, New Study Reveals

|

Many people dislike the month of August for its hot and humid weather. To some, it is an especially bitter time of year for another reason – divorce. According to a new study conducted by the University of Washington’s Brian Serafini and Julie Brines, divorce rates tend to spike on a seasonal basis during the months of March and August. Derived by studying divorce filings in the state of Washington from 2001 to 2015, the study’s data reveals that divorces consistently peak in the periods following winter and summer holidays. But why is this the case?

According to Serafini and Brines, winter and summer holidays are culturally sacred times for families during which filing for divorce is considered inappropriate or taboo. As such, troubled couples often see the holidays as a time to fix their relationship and begin again. Unfortunately, this last-ditch effort does not always work out as planned. According to the “broken promise” hypothesis, when a couple’s holiday season or vacation does not live up to their expectations, fissures in the marriage can become exposed and worsened, leading couples to decide to part ways.

Another reason why this may be the case is because couples need time to get their finances in order, find an attorney, or even gather up the courage to file for divorce. While these considerations apply during summer, the start of the school year may hurry this timing for couples who share children.
